How Cocoon Coffee House Got Its Name

Hawley Silk Mill was built in 1880 and operated until 1956. Today, it is still the largest laid bluestone building in the world. While its role as a silk mill has been retired, the building now serves the Hawley, PA, community as a thriving lifestyle center. A small structure is nestled directly in front of the building and once housed the cocoons that were used to produce silk. Today, you’ll find the cocoon shelter has been completely transformed into a cozy coffee shop named Cocoon Coffee House. The moniker pays homage to the structure’s original purpose.

What Makes Cocoon Coffee the Masters of Coffee

Cocoon Coffee House is the pinnacle of a quintessential coffee shop in the Poconos. From the moment you walk through the doors, you’ll be greeted with the smell of freshly roasted coffee beans, a cozy atmosphere, and friendly staff that are always ready to answer any of your questions. Once you order your custom-blended coffee, find the perfect spot to sit and unwind in the seating area or find something to read from the used book collection.

Where Is the Coffee Sourced?

Cocoon Coffee House sources its coffee exclusively from Electric City Roasting Co. in Scranton, PA. Electric City Coffee Roasting (ECR) is a company run by Mary Tellie, who is a coffee specialist, certified cupper, licensed Q Grader with the Coffee Quality Institute, and a Barista Guild of America Level 1 certified barista. That’s impressive!

Mary’s company is “all about the bean” and prides itself on bringing the highest quality coffees from around the world to roast and distribute to shops and stores, including Cocoon Coffee House. ECR is focused on not only providing high-quality coffee but doing so in a socially responsible way. They purchase coffee beans directly from growers to be sure they are compensated properly and fairly.

In addition, the company goes above and beyond Certified Fair Trade Practices, which ensures that the price of green coffee exceeds the growers’ costs. Electric City Roasting exceeds the criteria by paying the farmer at least 25% above Fair Trade to leave direct traceability—coffee sold to their customers directly from the farmer.
