Holiday season is upon us and, quite often, there is no better gift than one that is handmade. Anyone who has ever given or received a special handmade item can attest to the pride and joy that surrounds such a gift. There is a great place to take classes to learn how to make a cozy hat or blanket, or learn how to embellish something that you’ve already created: The Gentle Arts at Hawley Silk Mill. This shop is also a great place to find handmade items if you don’t have the time to make something yourself!
What Will You Find at The Gentle Arts?
The Gentle Arts recently opened its latest location in the Hawley Silk Mill, which doubles as a studio for classes, as well as a boutique. If you’d like to sign up for a class, you can certainly do so. Or if you like the idea of a hand-knitted scarf, blanket, sweater or other items, but don’t have the time to make it, you can purchase an item that has been handmade by one o
f the local artists that is available in the boutique.
In addition if you love to knit and already have incredible creations in mind, you can buy all your yarn and notions at The Gentle Arts. It’s a veritable one-stop-shop for almost all of your knitting needs. When you visit a store such as The Gentle Arts for yarn, you will find high-quality fibers that are quite different than you might find in a typical craft or discount store. Here, you’ll find angora, cashmere, wool, alpaca and more, that will help you to create a one-of-a-kind work of art.
Workshops, classes and group meetings are fun ways to learn something new about the fiber arts. Recent offerings have included a free “Sit and Spin” gathering, where spinners can get together, bring their own wheel and spin with a group of like-minded people. This group gets together inside or outside, weather permitting. Another fun gathering that was recently offered for any skill level was the Needle Felting Workshop. This offered the opportunity to learn how to needle felt.
A new schedule of 2016 spinning events has just been released and is available on The Gentle Arts’ Facebook page. Each event will be held in a different location to be announced. You may find yourself spinning lakeside, fireside or in the garden! It’s easy to register for classes, simply contact the store directly at 570-226-4334.
Shopping for a Spinning Wheel?
Once you try a couple of the classes at The Gentle Arts, you might be ready to jump into a new hobby and find yourself in the market for a spinning wheel. Lucky for you, the Gentle Arts is an authorized spinning wheel dealer for two well-known brands: Kromski and Schacht. They often have spinning wheels on hand and ready for purchase.

The Silk Mill in Hawley has been a vital part of this community since its construction in 1880. Its many incarnations over the years have included a silk factory, with the foremost technology of the day, a textile factory and antique center. Never has it been more vibrant than today. The vision for the repurposed factory is to have a center that celebrates the lifestyle of the Pocono Lake Region – a place for the residents and visitors alike to shop, gather, eat, exercise, and learn.
