5 of the Most Beautiful Fall Foliage Rides on the Stourbridge Line

Stourbridge Line Fall is in full swing and the beautiful shades of autumn are making their way through Pennsylvania’s foliage. There are many wonderful ways to see the fall foliage in Hawley, but one of our personal favorites is by train! The Stourbridge line is a historic railway that offers tours of Northeastern, PA’s breathtaking fall scenery. Not only will you experience jaw-dropping views, but you will learn a bit about the history of the region along the way. It’s a fun-filled excursion the whole family is sure to love!

History of the Stourbridge Railroad

In 1827, the Delaware and Hudson Canal Company was in need of a steam engine to haul coal from its mines in Pennsylvania to New York City. They began to investigate locomotive use, and the Stourbridge Lion was born. The steel locomotive arrived in Honesdale in July of 1829. At this time, about three miles of wooden track had been laid for the test run. Crowds assembled to witness the test run that August, convinced the Lion wouldn’t work. Imagine their surprise when the conductor, Horatio Allen, rode the track all the way around and back into Honesdale. This marked the beginning of a new era in commercial transportation.
